Grammos Mountain

This is one of the most famous mountains of Greece. It is known both for its ecological value in the region of Epirus and its important role in the civil war. It is part of the Natura 2000 network and the network of "Important Bird Areas".

Grammos Mountain stands out for its rich flora and fauna: deciduous trees, beeches, oaks and pines, brown bears (protected species in Greece and Europe), wolves, chamois, otters, golden eagles, vultures, hawks etc. Also, this is the starting point for two famous rivers, Aliakmonas and Sarantaporos. The highest peak of the mountain is called Tsuka Petsik and it is 2.520m high. Without snow it is quite easy to reach the top of the mountain even if you do not have special mountaineering knowledge. However, if it is snowy, things get difficult. Two of the most famous villages are Aetomilitsa and Grammousta. From the latter, you can easily access one of the largest alpine lakes in Greece, Gkistova Lake. The place is ideal for camping.

The mountain slopes are also well known for the battles between the national army and the rebels. The national army (90,000 men) fought the 4,500 rebels of Grammos and 7,500 rebels at Mount Vitsi. There are no shelters on the mountain, but there are a couple of guest houses in Aetomilitsa and Grammousta villages.
