Prehistoric Lake Settlement at Dispilio

This prehistoric village is located 8 km far from Kastoria and  was accidentally discovered in 1932.

Its first phase dates back to 5,500 BC and it is one of the first lacustrine settlements ever discovered in Europe. The huts were of circular or rectangular shape and were built on platforms on the top of the lake or on its banks. Approximately three thousand people lived there and performed daily activities such as gathering food, taking care of their pets, going fishing, manufacturing tools etc. Some of the most important findings of the settlement are flutes from bird bones (the oldest music instrument discovered in Europe) and a one-piece wood boat.

Since 2000, the area functions as an open-museum with an accurate representation of the lake settlement. The outline of the huts was made by tree trunks and the walls were made of branches. The huts were plastered with mud from the lake and the roofs were made by straws.
